On this cite it talks about the birthmark representing Georgina's humanity, like representing her flaws. Alymer is trying to rid her of her flaws. In the story it talks about the birthmark changing color to match the color of Georgina's face, for instance when it turns red. This article says the color of red shows blood and passion. It also says the birthmark is symbolic because it represents Georgina's sexuality, Alymer is feeling not in control so he rids of the birthmark to keep himself in control.

I like in the webpage where it says "But on a symbolic level, he wants to rid Georgiana of her flaws. He wants to make her perfect. Ironically, Aylmer succeeds." I think the birthmark is a good symbol of every flaw, and how people might have the best and prettiest things ever, but its never enough. Georgiana was the most beautiful lady ever and that wasn't enough for Alymer. I like how they this website states the literal and symbolic meaning. The literal meaning is "he wants to take off what he considers to be an unattractive birthmark." and the symbolic meaning is that nothing is ever good enough for humans.
